Kevin Atwood (Board Member)
Kevin is a Bettendorf, IA graduate. He lost his son, Foster, to suicide on July 21st of 2017 at the of 19. Since then he has worked to advocate for suicide awareness and prevention, creating Foster’s Voice for his community where he tells his sons story in Colleges, High Schools, Jr. High Schools, Church groups and to anyone who wants to hear it! He and his wife put together a team of around 100 people for their first Out of Darkness walk that September of 2017, which was his first interaction with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He met Christina Malchodi along the way who introduced him to Iowa AFSP, later becoming a Field Advocate and now the Public Policy Chair. In the last several months, he has attended Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training and becoming trained in suicide first aid. He has been to Washington D.C. with AFSP to advocate with both the House of Representatives and the Senate and recently with the help of a great team was able to launch Iowa’s first State Capitol Day to help ensure our voices are being heard.
