Wendy Martinez (Treasurer and Walk Chair in Mason City)
Wendy has been involved with suicide prevention since high school in Pueblo, CO., where she had a good friend attempt suicide. She was soon trained in prevention and staffed a crisis line for teens; she was awarded volunteer of the year. Wendy helped with the local support group, Heartbeat. After losing her brother to suicide in 2004, she became even more involved throughout the country. She participated in several training’s/seminars: at the Center for Grief and Loss Counseling and Education; Healing After Suicide Annual Conference by the American Association of Suicidology; and the Survivor of Suicide (SOS) Training at the Link Counseling Center with Iris Bolton. She moved from Colorado, to Santa Fe, NM., and then to Mason City, Iowa. Along the way, she assisted with the New Mexico Survivor of Suicide local Support Group, attended The Overnight in Chicago, assisted with delivery of Columbia University Teen Screen, and completed AFSP’s Training’s to Facilitate a Suicide Support Group – for both Adults and for Teens. She coordinated the various ISOS Day Conference’s and the OOTD CW in Mason City since 2007 and the Ride to Fight Suicide since 2015 also in Mason City. She currently facilitates a monthly support group called Touched by Suicide. Wendy has a B.A. in Human Services from Buena Vista University and is currently a Trainer for Centene Corportation – Iowa Total Care. She also has an Associate’s degree in Web Design, in which she maintains various websites for veteran or military organizations.
