AFSP State Capitol Days bring together passionate volunteers to advocate for state policy changes that will improve mental health and prevent suicide. We will meet with our state legislators during the event to:
- Share with them why suicide prevention is important to YOU and to your community
- Educate them about the work being done in your community to prevent suicide
- Teach them what more must be done to prevent suicide
The event will include a brief training session on the basics of an effective advocacy visit and current policy issues. We will then go on several in-person visits with state legislators that will be scheduled ahead of time.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Thursday, February 28, 2019 11:59PM
Each year, State Capitol Day events bring volunteers together with state and local elected officials to share information and urge that suicide prevention be made a priority. Each event is customized with the help of the AFSP Public Policy Team to meet each state’s unique needs and legislative priorities. State Capitol Day events are either put on by a single AFSP chapter, organized by several chapters within a state, or done in coordination with partner mental health and suicide prevention organizations.
In 2018, AFSP chapters hosted 34 State Capitol Day events that brought over 1,000 advocates to their state capitols, and since, 10 state bills have been enacted that now require suicide prevention policies and personnel training in K-12 schools, data collection on veteran suicides, statewide crisis lines, and reporting on statewide suicide prevention activities, among others. Many thanks to our advocates who made their voices heard for these events!
