Join the Arkansas Overnight Team!
By joining the AFSP Arkansas Team for “The Overnight Walk” in Washington D.C. on June 17th-18th, 2017, you are ensuring that 25% of funds raised as a team will remain in Arkansas. The donations go towards research, education, advocacy, program and services.
This 16-18 mile walk from dusk to dawn is a powerful journey through the night. It is truly inspirational event which courageous men and women come together as a community and walk together to break the silence of suicide.
Our team is open to groups and everyone who wants to join!
Each person that is a member of this team has their own reasons for walking. Some have loved ones that died by suicide or as a result of their mental illness. Others have loved ones that have struggled with mental illness or suicidal ideation. Some team members struggled personally and others on our team are there to support the cause. Regardless of the reason, we all support each other and all support the cause of suicide prevention.
In Arkansas, Suicide is one of the leading causes of death. Because of research funding, we now know suicide is preventable. 90% of those who die by suicide have a dignosed treatmentable mental illness at the time of death and 50% of them have seen a clinician with in 60 days.
Every year suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined, and yet suicide prevention doesn’t get anywhere near the funding given to other leading causes of death. It’s up to walkers like us to make a difference. Together we can change the conversation about mental health and put a stop to this tragic loss of life. The AFSP’s goal is to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
We walk together to help bring people out of the darkness!
