The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Training Program “Facilitating a Suicide Bereavement  Support Group” teaches survivors of suicide loss, mental health professionals, and interested others the fundamentals of creating and facilitating a support group. This training event on March 23-24, 2018 in Western PA is for facilitators of adult suicide loss support groups. This event is sponsored by the Western PA chapter of AFSP but is open to attendees from anywhere in the U.S.

The program is appropriate both for those who want to start a new group and for those who currently facilitate a support group and would like to hear new ideas, practice and strengthen their skills, and explore issues they have encountered while facilitating a group. The training combines lecture, interactive discussion, and role-play with individualized feedback.

Note: In order to create a positive learning environment, we ask survivors of suicide loss to wait at least two years after the suicide of their loved one before attending. We also recommend that all nonclinician attendees have at least one year experience participating in a support group before signing up to attend the training. This is a training program; it is not meant to serve as a healing conference or a support group to address individual grief issues.

Currently, AFSP does not offer CEUs for this training, but a letter of attendance outlining the training can be provided by AFSP National to attendees upon request.

Fee: The cost of this training is $150 per attendee, and includes dinner on Friday plus breakfast and lunch on Saturday as well as all the training materials. This fee does not include hotel and other travel fees.

Event Schedule:

  • Friday, March 23:
    • 1:00 – 1:30 PM – Registration / Check-in
    • 1:30 – 6:00 PM – Training program
    • 6:00 – 6:30 PM – Break
    • 6:30 – 9:30 PM – Working dinner  (dinner provided)
  • Saturday, March 24:
    • 8:00 – 8:45 AM – Breakfast
    • 8:45 AM – 12:00 PM – Training program, including breakout groups
    • 12:00 – 12:45 PM – Lunch
    • 12:45 – 3:30 PM – Training program

Location: The training will take place at the DoubleTree Pittsburgh Airport – meeting room Salon A.

Hotel rooms: Our hotel room block at the DoubleTree Airport is now full. Several other hotels are available within minutes drive with rooms for under $100/night (per Expedia published rates), including: Hampton Inn Pittsburgh Airport; La Quinta Inn Pittsburgh Airport; Americas Best Value Inn Pittsburgh Airport. The Hilton Garden Inn Pittsburgh Airport has rates in the $100-$125/night range.
