Chloe – University of New Hampshire
Public Policy Associate
I was fortunate enough to have gotten accepted into The Washington Center Program via my home institution where they connected me with AFSP. Since then, I have had the honor of working with John, Trevor, and Nicole this summer at the public policy office here in D.C. At first I was a little nervous about interning here since I am not very familiar with politics but have since learned an ample amount of information about issues on the federal and state level. I have grown to love this program so much that I plan on becoming a field advocate after I finish my term here as a public policy associate.
One of the first weeks here was AFSP’s annual Advocacy Forum which is when Field advocates from all over the country go to meet with their senators and representatives and discuss mental health legislature that is in the process of trying to be passed. Even though it was a little stressful in the beginning, I loved being able to meet some of the people that I would be contacting later on in the summer and also hearing their stories of why they got involved in this amazing cause.
Working here this summer has had an astounding impact on my life both on a professional and personal level and I wouldn’t change my experiences for the world. If you are given the opportunity to work in this office, I highly recommend it.
