Morgan – Ohio State University
Public Policy Associate
I learned and experienced so much this summer as a Public Policy Associate with AFSP. At the beginning of the summer though I knew the position description, I didn’t really know what to expect. While I am interested in public health and public policy I had not had an internship or experience where my two interests merged. I found that with the AFSP: Public Policy office.
I was the first intern in the office for the summer and on my first day I began to realize all of the work and opportunities I would gain. I sat in on a brief discussion with legislative staff person, attended an AFSP lived experience panel in a House office building and met many people within the AFSP network. I was overwhelmed but also excited about what was to come of the rest of the summer.
Being able to meet many interesting and influential people while working on the Congressional Spouses event with Judy Collins, the AFSP Advocacy Forum and attending different events was an amazing experience and I was able to enjoy it all with the others interns, John, Trevor, Nicole, and Smitty. They made the office and this internship a great and comfortable place to learn, develop new skills, and grow both as a student and an AFSP Public Policy Associate..
I really enjoyed working for AFSP from stuffing envelopes with everyone for the Judy Collins event, helping prepare and complete the Advocacy Forum, to updating the state firearm safety fact sheets, every task was important. I was able to complete projects every day that made me feel beneficial to the team and all the work that AFSP does. I wouldn’t change anything because I appreciate all that I gained through this experience.
