Full Funding of the National Violent Death Reporting System
About the issue
In order to design effective suicide prevention strategies, we must first have complete, accurate, and timely information about deaths by suicide. The National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) provides this information, which is essential to improve state and federal suicide prevention activities. Current funding of $16.3 million allows 32 states to participate in the program run out of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
AFSP urges Congress to appropriate the $25 million necessary to fully fund the NVDRS and collect data from all 50 states. States currently without funding are listed below. If your state is on the list, contact your representative today. For more information read our NVDRS issue brief.
