Volunteers Celebrate Award

The 2024 Chapter Leadership Conference, a pivotal event in the AFSP calendar, provided an invaluable opportunity for chapter leaders from across the nation to gather, share best practices, and strategize for the year ahead. Hosted in Orlando, Florida in January, the conference provided an opportunity for the Central Texas Chapter to actively engage in discussions, workshops, and networking sessions aimed at strengthening our chapter’s impact in the fight against suicide.

This year’s conference was a momentous occasion for Texas chapters, as they emerged as frontrunners and clinched the coveted award for Outstanding Chapter Strategic Partnerships and Innovative Strategies. Among these standout contributors was the Central Texas Chapter, whose collaborative efforts with other Texas chapters have set a new standard for statewide engagement and impact.

Another notable achievement of the Central Texas Chapter at the conference was the success of the Austin Out of the Darkness Walk. This annual fundraising event saw remarkable success under the chapter's leadership. With 412 walks held nationwide, the Austin Walk rose to the impressive rank of #20 in fundraising, showcasing the unwavering support from the local community.

The recognition received at the conference was a testament to the Central Texas Chapter volunteers’ dedication and innovative approach to suicide prevention. The dedication to fundraising to ensure the ability to expand programs and support not only strengthened their impact within the community but have also inspired and empowered others to join the cause.

As the conference drew to a close, attendees were treated to a presentation by Dr. Amy Grosso, a board member for the Central Texas Chapter and member of the AFSP National Chapter Leadership Council. Dr. Grosso's presentation focused on the importance of prioritizing personal boundaries as part of a self-care routine—a crucial aspect of mental health and well-being often overlooked in the realm of suicide prevention.

The Central Texas Chapter's remarkable achievements at the Chapter Leadership Conference and the success of the Austin Out of the Darkness Walk underscore their unwavering commitment to suicide prevention and mental health advocacy. It is only through dedicated volunteers that the effort in Central Texas to expand suicide prevention will continue.
