Become a suicide prevention Advocacy Ambassador
AFSP Advocacy Ambassadors are passionate leaders dedicated to saving lives through bold policy change. As liaisons between public officials at all levels of government with the AFSP Policy and Advocacy Office and their Chapter Public Policy Committee, they champion meaningful progress and amplify the powerful voice of the suicide prevention movement.
Who is Eligible?
Advocacy Ambassadors should be:
- 18 years or older and affiliated with a local AFSP chapter
- Knowledgeable about legislative processes and passionate about AFSP’s Public Policy Priorities
- Have or working to have established relationships and/or regular communication with their public officials or staff at the federal and/or state level
- Confident communicators who can share their connection to suicide prevention while adhering to safe messaging guidelines
- Maintain professionalism and understand the nuances of representing AFSP as a 501c3, including keeping a conflict of interest form up to date at the state level
Program Expectations
Ambassadors dedicate at least 2 hours monthly and commit to:
- Serving as a member of their Chapter’s Public Policy Committee (as applicable)
- Participating in bi-monthly Advocacy Ambassador Zoom calls and responding to all AFSP Advocacy Action Alerts
- Assisting in planning and attending (as applicable) your state’s Advocacy Action Day and other advocacy events
- Hosting at least one annual “Advocacy 101” presentation
- Participating in regular meetings (2+/year) with public officials to advocate for suicide prevention policies, logging all legislative meetings in AFSP’s advocacy software, and ensuring effective follow-up communication with all public officials and their staff
- Staying informed on federal and state legislation and sharing updates with chapter committees and AFSP Policy and Advocacy Office
- Representing AFSP in policy discussions, committee hearings, or legislative events as they come up and pertain to your state
How to Apply
Interested volunteers should contact their local AFSP chapter (afsp.org/chapters) to begin the application process. Chapter staff will provide a formal application. If approved, applicants will be forwarded to the AFSP Policy and Advocacy Office for a final interview. Selected applicants will receive onboarding and support from AFSP Public Policy Staff.
