Name and Board Title

Joyce Salls, Board Treasurer

What city do you call home?

Tampa, Florida

Tell us a little bit about your background – personal and/or professional.

Professionally, I am a retired professor of occupational therapy and had a pediatric private practice for several years in Pittsburgh. I lost my daughter to suicide in 2002 and my husband in 2017 and have been involved with AFSP for many years. I served as a campus walk co-chair for 3 years at my university, and have participated in many community walks and an overnight walk in Boston. I moved to Tampa in 2020 when I retired and my grandson was born. My hobbies are running, cycling, traveling, and spending time with my sweet grandson. I am grateful to be part of the Tampa Bay Chapter of AFSP!

Where did you grow up?

New York City

What might someone be surprised to learn about you?

I have run 14 marathons.

Why did you become involved with AFSP?

I lost 2 family members to suicide and want to support the work AFSP does to prevent suicide.

What was your first introduction to AFSP?

The Pittsburgh Out of the Darkness Walk was my first introduction to AFSP.

What is one of the most important things you would share with the community about AFSP?

I am so grateful to be part on this organization of passionate individuals with a focus on doing the important work of destigmatizing mental health, preventing suicide and providing support to those affected by suicide. The work that AFSP does is making a difference through advocacy, education, and research.
