Greetings New Jersey! We're excited to re-introduce a series that aims to shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes in our community—the Volunteer Spotlight!
In this monthly series, we'll shine a spotlight on one exceptional volunteer who goes above and beyond to make a positive impact in our community.
Why a Volunteer Spotlight?
At AFSP NJ, we believe that safe storytelling is a powerful way to promote healing for both the storyteller and the reader. Each volunteer has a unique story and deserves recognition for their dedication. By sharing their experiences, we hope to inspire and encourage more individuals to join us in making a difference!
Meet Our First Star: Beth Fitch
In our inaugural post, we're thrilled to introduce you to Beth Fitch! Jersey Shore Out of the Darkness Walk Chair. Learn more about Beth below:
"In December 2016 I lost my amazing husband Douglas to suicide. Confusion and shock ripped through my body like a sharp knife. You see, Douglas was the light to every situation; he brought so much joy and laughter to others.
He was a grill master, a shoulder to cry on, and that special non-judgmental friend that everyone needed. He was there for everyone. How could I not know he was struggling with depression? The guilt was so heavy I couldn’t get out of bed for days.
I was heartbroken and lost.
In my grief, I wanted to do something to honor him and better understand what suicide is; who does this affect? I got on the computer and came across AFSP. I learned so much just from the website. The most important was that I am not alone.
So I rallied my little village and signed everyone up for our first AFSP Jersey Shore walk in Sept 2017. We created The Dougie Fresh Team. We completed our first walk; I met others in my situation and in some aspect, it gave me permission to smile again.
I still wanted to do more and give back more, so the following year I became the AFSP Jersey Shore Walk Chair. In this position, I connect with families who are on the same journey and just need someone to listen. I work with our amazing committee raising funds and bringing awareness all throughout the year leading up to our big annual walk day in September. I’m a fixer type personality and I soon learned I couldn’t fix my situation but maybe sharing my story could help others in some small way. I know Douglas is proud of me and proud of our family for our continued dedication to bring awareness in his honor.. #itsallgood."
