Meet our Volunteer of the Month for November 2023 - Brin Spaunhorst!
Brin volunteers in the Jefferson City area and we are so grateful to recognize her this month!
A little about Brin:
I feel grateful to be able to volunteer with AFSP. My "why" to serve as a volunteer is two-fold, both from a personal and professional lens. As a mental health therapist, I work daily with those affected by suicide-whether it be their own struggles, family/friends who struggle, or themselves as suicide loss survivors. This has always been a favorite population to work with as I find great meaning and purpose in helping others to find their own strength, hope, meaning and purpose. Seeing the folks I get to work with live to see another day and find their meaning in life is the ultimate reward. Another "why" (largely in part due to why I'm a therapist now) comes from losing family members and friends over the years to suicide. Then, in 2021, I lost my dear brother, Zach, to suicide. I had never felt a pain this deep until these losses, especially my brother. I want others to know, more than ever, that they are not alone. That ignited another spark in me to see what else I can do to reach people on a wider scale, when I learned more about AFSP volunteer work. Through my own grief, personal therapy, my work, support from others, I have found this to be my mission-educating others about suicide prevention and spreading the important message to "STAY." There is help, and there is HOPE.
Thank you, Brin, for all you do to Help Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide!
