Meet Our Board Members: Maria Bedoya, LMHC-QS

February 7, 2024 – 2 min read

Maria Bedoya

Name and Board Title

Maria Bedoya, LMHC-QS, Southeast Chapter Board Member and Palm Beach County Walk Chair

What city do you call home?

The City of Boca Raton is my current home!

Where did you grow up?

My parents moved to Miami, FL in 1992 from Colombia. I have lived in Kendall from 1993 till 2013.

What might someone be surprised to learn about you?

I am a "dreamer" meaning, I grew up undocumented. I didn't find out I was undocumented till the age of 16, where I lost hope of any future goals and aspirations. My biology teacher then introduced me to the Dream Act bill and from that moment on I became an advocate for legislative change. Though the Dream Act was never passed, I am happy we at least got DACA to pass for Dreamers like myself and across the nation.

What was your first introduction to AFSP?

I have been an active participant in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) since 2011, when I first engaged as a graduate student during a community walk. I am grateful to have been nominated and selected to serve as a board member in June 2023.

Why did you become involved with AFSP?

At first I became involved as graduate student studying in the field of mental health counseling. I felt that not enough training and education was provided in my coursework and I wanted to learn more. I started volunteering in 2011 in the campus walks. On November 2013 we lost my cousin to suicide and coming from a Latino background, we did not talk about is suicide. Instead, it was kept quiet and when asked we were asked to say that he died of natural causes. That moment sparked an additional passion to educate others on safe messaging, being okay to talk about suicide, and supporting survivors of loss.

What is one of the most important things you would share with the community about AFSP?

I love to share that AFSP is a great network of support whether you are a survivor of loss, have lived experience, or are an advocate for mental health awareness!

Anythign else you'd like to share?

I am excited to be the Chair for the community walk for Palm Beach County!

What are three unexpected items on your desk?

1. A book of positive affirmation quotes

2. Lavender and peppermint essential oils

3. Ultrasound picture of my son!

Do you have a hidden talent?

I wish I did! I have been told I am great at connecting with others.
