Montana Chapter Board & Volunteers

AFSP Montana

AFSP Montana Chapter was founded in 2001 and has been working to educate Montana about suicide prevention, advocate for legislation that will save lives, and support those who’ve experienced loss or who have lived experience.

About the AFSP Montana Chapter

The grassroots work we do focuses on eliminating the loss of life from suicide by: delivering innovative prevention programs, educating the public about risk factors and warning signs, raising funds for suicide research and programs, and reaching out to those individuals who have lost someone to suicide.

As a part of AFSP’s growing nationwide network of chapters, we bring together people from all backgrounds who want to prevent suicide in our communities. Families and friends who have lost someone to suicide, vulnerable individuals, mental health professionals, clergy, educators, students, community/business leaders, and many others energize our chapter.

AFSP Montana Chapter was founded in 2001 and has been working to educate Montana about suicide prevention, advocate for legislation that will save lives, and support those who’ve experienced loss or who have lived experience.

We believe that suicide is preventable, and that with enough people doing the work, spreading the message and stomping out stigma, we can make a difference.

Join us in our mission:

To Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide!

Register for a walk, or volunteer on a walk committee! Our primary source of funding comes from Out of the Darkness Community Walks and Out of the Darkness Campus Walks in Montana cities. register online to walk, or contact the walk chair for the Community Walk or Campus Walk nearest you for more information on getting involved with planning the walk!

Become a volunteer! Complete our volunteer application so we can match you to volunteer opportunities in your area of Montana.

Become a field advocate! Field advocates receive emails when there is pending legislation that has a direct impact on suicide prevention and allows for a quick and simple way to send feedback to your specific representatives at a state or national level who may be voting on that legislation. Advocacy is a huge part of the puzzle, and the more voices behind an issue, the more attention it receives. Just register as a field advocate and you’ll be on the path to making a difference!

Montana Chapter will be hosting a State Capitol Day in Helena on February 25th, 2021. AFSP’s State Capitol Day events bring volunteers together to educate state and local elected officials about suicide prevention and mental health. Sharing personal stories, experiences, and the latest research, we talk with state and local elected officials and their staff about how we can work together to prevent suicide and improve mental health. If you’re interested in participating in our State Capitol Day, when you register as a field advocate make sure you OPT IN to receive CHAPTER COMMUNICATIONS. This is the list we will be using to reach out to folks who have confirmed their interest in local advocacy!

There are also other ways to get involved:

  • If you’re a quilter, you can assist with the Montana Chapter’s Lifekeeper Memory Quilt Project.
    • Even if you're not a quilter, you can download our simple instructions to create and submit a quilt square in memory of your lost loved one, or request assitance for a volunteer to create a square for you.
  • If you’re a loss survivor, become trained to provide outreach to others through the Healing Conversations Program (formerly Survivor Outreach Program)
  • Keep an eye on our Chapter Events for other opportunities to learn, grow, and save lives!
  • We send a weekly email to Montana Chapter Volunteers and stakeholders with what's going on for the chapter. If you are interested in receiving this email, contact us and we will get you added to the list. We also suggest that you fill out the Volunteer application so we can identify volunteer opportunities specific to your interests.

Thank you for your interest in, and support for, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Montana Chapter!
