On May 18th, during Mental Health Awareness Month, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP) National Capital Area Chapter (NCAC) hosted its second annual Paws for Prevention fundraising event in Alexandria, Virginia. Despite it raining cats and dogs, dozens of volunteers, sponsors, and paw-ticipants turned out for the event to fundraise, give, and learn more about AFSP’s important mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide and the important role our furry (and sometimes scaly) friends can play in supporting our mental health.
Attendees made new friends, played frisbee, and snacked on treats while their humans enjoyed a complimentary lunch provided Rocklands BBQ and made some new friends too! Meanwhile, resources fair exhibitors shared information on how their businesses and organizations serve our community through their support for mental health.
Through this event, more than $11,000 was raised to fund AFSP's lifesaving research, education and community programs, advocacy, and support for those impacted by suicide.
Thank you to Paws for Prevention Chair Regina Ham, Deputy Chair Colin Jarratt, the planning committee, day-of-event volunteers, fundraisers, sponsors, donors, and everyone who supported this important community event!
