Tips for Getting Started with Volunteering

With so many opportunities and ways to engage, it can be a lot of information to take in all at once. It can also leave some feeling like they don't know where to start. Follow the link above to find tips and tools to help you achieve your volunteer goals.

Connect

  • Online Volunteer Application Complete this form to get started! After your application is submitted, our Volunteer Chair will reach out to you to set up a welcome meeting where we can get to know you, share about what volunteer opportunities exist, and answer any questions you may have!

  • Volunteer Calendar Check this out to find upcoming volunteer opportunities. Click through to learn more and sign up to volunteer.

  • Become an Advocate By signing up as an AFSP Volunteer Advocate, you'll become a vital part of a large grassroots movement of people who are speaking out for suicide prevention and mental health at all levels of government.

  • Follow Us on Social @afspncac

Learn

  • Attend a Volunteer Orientation Connect with other volunteers and chapter leadership and learn more about AFSP and our local opportunities in the National Capital Area.

  • Speaking Out About Suicide Sharing about suicide can save lives, but only if you do it safely. Read through this resource to learn what to do and what to avoid when speaking out about suicide.

  • Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention Attend a presentation of this AFSP educational program to gain a clear understanding of this leading cause of death, including the most up-to-date research on suicide prevention, and what they can do in their communities to save lives.

Engage

  • Register for an Out of the Darkness Walk (DC, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William)

  • Meet the NCAC Leadership Get to know them by reading their bios and find their contact info to connect! You can email them anytime to learn how they became a Board Member, what they do on the Board, solicit their advice, introduce them to people in your network, and share your feedback.

  • Connect Your Personal Network AFSP volunteers are our biggest connectors to our community! Share about AFSP with people you know as well as businesses/organizations/schools/community groups with which you are affiliated. Introduce interested parties to chapter leadership so we can share more about our resources, programs, and opportunities to support.
