Seize the Awkward

We understand that it can sometimes feel awkward to start a conversation about mental health, whether for yourself or someone else. But you don’t need to be a mental health expert to show up for someone struggling. When a friend or family member is hurting, showing up and being yourself is more important than finding the perfect words. The following resources can help you learn how to support a friend, or get help for yourself.

About Seize the Awkward

Seize the Awkward is a national campaign that empowers young adults to talk openly about mental health and check in on their friends, even when it might feel awkward. Whether you think a friend or family member is struggling, or you just want to check in, reaching out about mental health can help break the silence, reduce stigma, and offer support when it’s needed most.

The campaign was created in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the JED Foundation, and the Ad Council. Under the leadership of AFSP and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the campaign continues to build success and inspire even more young people to check in with one another.

Today, Seize the Awkward videos have been viewed over 50 million times, and over two million people have visited seizetheawkward.org.
