NEW YORK (November 13, 2024)—Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest independent nonprofit evaluator awarded the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) its highest honor: a Four-Star rating. The grade recognizes AFSP’s strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency.
Charity Navigator is the nation’s largest charity evaluator, providing donors with thorough and credible ratings of more than 230,000 organizations. Since 2001, the organization has been an unbiased and trusted source of information for more than 11 million donors annually.
With 73 chapters in all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico, AFSP is a leading suicide prevention organization in the United States. Most of its funding comes from small, individual donations from participants in the organization’s hundreds of Out of the Darkness Community Walks. Each donation helps build a nationwide community empowered by research, education, survivor support and advocacy to act against this preventable cause of death.
“A Four-Star Charity Navigator rating is further evidence of AFSP’s commitment to sound financial management,” said AFSP CEO Robert Gebbia. “We are proud that donors and volunteers can trust they are investing time and resources wisely as we work together to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.”
The ratings are calculated by analyzing overall nonprofit health and performance based on four key areas:
- Leadership & adaptability
- Accountability & finance
- Culture & community
- Impact & results
“We are delighted to provide AFSP with third-party accreditation that validates their operational excellence,” said Michael Thatcher, president and CEO of Charity Navigator. “The Four-Star Rating is the highest possible rating an organization can achieve. We are eager to see the good work that AFSP can accomplish in the years ahead.”
