Name and Board Title

Olivia Shears, Board Member

What city do you call home?

Hollywood, FL

Where did you grow up?

Born in Fort Myers Florida, then moved to Iowa, then Pennsylvania before coming to Miami for college.

What are your hobbies?

Reading, running, any artsy activities, and of course, volunteering!

What might someone be surprised to learn about you?

Despite having a 'Girly girl' appearance, I'm a football fan that LOVES that outdoors. Things like time outside with my dog, golfing, camping, or backpacking trips make me happiest!

What was your first introduction to AFSP?

I was first introduced to AFSP through the Out of the Darkness Miami Walk in 2022, which was one of the most healing experiences I’ve had. I left that day knowing I wanted to be more involved, and immediately reached out to find ways to support the organization!

Why did you become involved with AFSP?

After losing a friend to suicide, it became something I didn’t openly talk about for years. At a certain point, I realized the only way to move forward was to move through it, and that meant finally talking about it.

Once I did, I saw how much it not only helped my own healing, but also resonated with others who were going through similar experiences. That realization is what led me to continuing my involvement with AFSP. Ending the stigma around mental health has since become a huge passion of mine.

What is one of the most important things you would share with the community about AFSP?

Talk to people. Open up about your own experiences with mental health. You may be surprised by just how many people can relate to and understand your story.

Community and conversation are some of the most powerful forms of healing, and they shouldn’t be taken for granted. Be a voice in your community, and you’ll be amazed by the ripple effect it can create!

Tell us about your background.

I moved to Miami in 2018 to attend Florida International University and quickly fell in love with the city and its sense of community. Since then, I’ve built my life and career here.

I’m the founder of two businesses: a social media agency, Social Bean Agency, and a friendship/connection focused brand, Long Distance Besties. Entrepreneurship has become a huge part of who I am, and I’m deeply passionate about building things that bring people together and make a meaningful impact.

Giving back has always been an important part of my life. Over the years, I’ve volunteered with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Make-A-Wish, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, among others. Philanthropy is something I truly couldn’t imagine my life without, and it continues to shape both my personal and professional path.
