In a poignant demonstration of solidarity and compassion, Pepco and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 1900 took a leading role in the 2024 Washington, D.C. Out of the Darkness Walk, organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP) National Capital Area Chapter (NCAC). As the event's Community Lifesaver Sponsor, Pepco and IBEW employees joined more than 1,500 participants to shine a light on the often-stigmatized subjects of mental health and suicide prevention. This sponsorship was made possible through the vision and dedication of Ken McCabe, Pepco's Manager of Data Analytics, who has been instrumental in fostering a meaningful relationship between Pepco, IBEW Local 1900, and the AFSP over the past few years.
The Washington, D.C. Out of the Darkness Walk served as a beacon of hope for many, bringing together survivors, advocates, and supporters to honor loved ones lost to suicide and champion the importance of mental health awareness. According to the CDC, suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States, and AFSP's Out of the Darkness Walks are critical for raising awareness, funding vital research, providing community resources, and sparking conversations that will save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. In 2024 alone, Pepco and its employees helped raise over $25,000 for AFSP through various initiatives, reflecting their dedication to AFSP's mission.

Ken’s journey with the AFSP-NCAC began several years ago as a personal mission to address mental health challenges within the workplace and community. His unwavering commitment inspired Pepco to step forward as a lead sponsor for the 2022 D.C. Walk. Ken’s advocacy didn’t stop there—he successfully expanded this partnership to include Pepco's sister companies, Atlantic City Electric and Delmarva Power, serving southern New Jersey, parts of the Maryland eastern shore, and Delaware. More than 40 employees joined the Atlantic City, Wilmington, and Milford walks with AFSP's New Jersey and Delaware Chapters in September and October 2024. Through these efforts, Pepco has strengthened its collective support of AFSP's lifesaving work.

Participation in AFSP's Out of the Darkness Community Walks provided Pepco employees with a powerful opportunity to unite for a shared cause. Staff from various departments and Employee Resource Groups joined forces, demonstrating that the company’s commitment to mental health goes beyond words. From fundraising efforts to walking together in solidarity, Pepco employees expressed pride in their collective ability to make a difference. Their relationship with AFSP also allowed employees to broaden their leadership experience within the company and foster new opportunities to share their stories.
“I have come to accept that the wounds left by my loss will never heal, and without warning something rips them open, reminding me that the work to heal will never be done,” says Christine Measamer, Senior Manager, Smart Grid & Innovation at Pepco Holdings. Christine’s father died by suicide when she was 11 years old. She hopes to help support others by sharing her story and bringing awareness to suicide prevention.
Pepco and IBEW Local 1900's relationship with AFSP emphasizes the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health discussions in the workplace. By aligning with AFSP, they have positioned themselves as advocates for mental well-being, encouraging employees and workers to access available resources and support systems. This commitment resonates deeply in an industry where stress and safety concerns can take a toll on mental health.
In recognition of his extraordinary volunteerism with AFSP throughout the year, Ken was honored by Pepco's parent company, Exelon, with their prestigious “Powering Communities” volunteer award and a $5,000 grant for the AFSP as part of his recognition. This award is yet another reflection of Exelon and Pepco's commitment to supporting AFSP.
“I’ve been incredibly touched by the way Pepco and IBEW 1900 employees show up to support this cause, and the stories we share,” said Ken. “It reminds me that we are far greater together and no one has to suffer alone.”
By providing more than energy, Pepco is empowering the communities they serve. By supporting AFSP's Out of the Darkness Walks, hosting impactful events, and championing holistic safety, they are lighting the way toward hope, healing, and a future where mental health is prioritized for all.
