It's that time again: February Volunteer Spotlight! Today, we shine a light on Nutan Chaturvedi, a dedicated volunteer who has been making a difference with AFSP for the past 5 years.
Nutan's Contributions:
Nutan's commitment to AFSP shines brightly as she serves as a vital committee member for the Middlesex County Out of Darkness Walk. But her impact doesn't stop there. She's also actively involved in educating through Talk Saves Lives and More Than Sad presentations.
Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention is a community-based presentation that covers the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to fight suicide. Topics covered include:
- Scope of the Problem: The latest data on suicide in the U.S. and worldwide
- Research: Information from research on what causes people to consider suicide, as well as health, historical, and environmental factors that put individuals at risk
- Prevention: An understanding of the protective factors that lower suicide risk, and strategies for managing mental health and being proactive about self-care
- What You Can Do: Guidance on warning signs and behaviors to look for, and how to get help for someone in a suicidal crisis
In addition to the standard presentation, specialized Talk Saves Lives modules are available that provide similar information, while focusing on specific at-risk communities:
- Talk Saves Lives — Latinx & Hispanic Communities
- Talk Saves Lives — Seniors
- Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention in the LGBTQ Community
- Talk Saves Lives — Suicide Prevention Education for Workplace Settings
- Talk Saves Lives: Firearms and Suicide Prevention
- Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention in the Correctional Environment
More Than Sad has taught over a million people how to be more proactive about mental health with modules for parents, teachers, educators, and other school personnel.
Why does Nutan's work with AFSP matter?
"Clearing the stigma around mental health and suicide is crucial to me. Prevention is protection. By opening up dialogue and sharing life-saving resources, we pave the way towards a world free from suicide."
