At the heart of AFSP New Jersey's mission are the dedicated volunteers who give their time, energy, and compassion to bring hope and connection to our community. This month, we're honored to shine a spotlight on two incredible volunteers. Their stories remind us that lasting change is built by people who care deeply and act with purpose. We are so grateful to celebrate their contributions.

Evelyn Bardzilowski
Years of involvement with AFSP:
I have been involved with AFSP since 2016
Volunteer role & why you wanted to get involved:
Rachelle and I actually got certified together as support group facilitators years ago, I have been involved with the Out of Darkness walks, but about 4 years ago, Rachelle and I saw the need for an International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day (ISOSLD) event in our area as the nearest ones were about an hour away. Our passion for the cause and genuine friendship help us work really well together.
Your connection to the cause and why your work with AFSP is important to you:
I lost my brother to suicide in 1987, then my father to suicide 6 weeks later. In 2016 when I lost my son to suicide, I felt the desire to spread hope and kindness, there is help, hope and support.

Rachelle St. Phard

Volunteer role & event with AFSP:
I've co-chaired the Mercer County Out of the Darkness Walk, I am trained as a support group facilitator for survivors of suicide loss, and I have co-chaired the Survivor Day event in Hightstown since 2021.
Why you wanted to get involved/Your connection to our cause:
I lost my son Coby to suicide in 2016. I also have a daughter who has had mental health issues and has struggled over the years. I want to make a difference in this world and help those who struggle as well as those who have lost.
Why your work with AFSP is important to you:
Making a difference! Being there for others. It’s healing for them AND for me!
